Liposuction is a good option for people unsatisfied with their disproportionate appearance, caused by localized fat deposits that do not improve with exercising or diet. It can be caused by weight fluctuations, lack of fitness or even heredity.
The liposuction procedure works reshaping specific areas of the body, removing fat deposits. Liposuction improves body contours, making them look more proportional. As a consequence, increases your self-image and confidence.
Liposuction may be performed at the following areas:
Liposuction can be performed alone or combined with plastic procedures like Facelift, Breast Reduction, Breast Lift, Breast Augmentation and Buttock Lift. If performed combined with a Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty), better results are usually achieved.
To submit the surgery, it is important to be healthy and avoid taking medications that could increase bleeding, such as aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs and herbal supplements. Also, the patient should not have medical conditions that could interfere in the surgery or healing process, preferably be a non-smoker and have realistic expectations about the procedure.
The patient should have a firm and elastic skin and also, a good muscle tone. Liposculpture can be performed on people who are near normal weight or even heavier people, however, the patient must be within 30% of its ideal weight. [ Top ]

For a Liposuction, it can be chosen between intravenous sedation and general anesthesia. In case of general Anesthesia, you will sleep through the entire operation. If the option is intravenous sedation, sedatives will be injected to help you relax. The best anesthesia method depends on your individual case and what your doctor is recommending. You will decide with him what is better for you. [ Top ]
During a Liposuction procedure, small and discrete incisions are made and a sterile solution is infused in the patient, in order to reduce bleeding and trauma.
If under SAL, a cannula – thin tube, is inserted and in a back and forth motion, fat is loosen. In case of UAL, fat is liquefied through ultrasonic energy. If the technique performed is PAL, fat is loosen through vibration.
Once the fat is ready to be removed, it is suctioned through a surgical vacuum or syringe which is attached to the cannula.
In case of large amounts of fat have been removed, it might be necessary to donate one or two units of your own blood and take supplemental iron before surgery. This way, at the end of surgery the patient can get their own blood if needed. [ Top ]
Right after Liposuction, a compression garment or elastic bandages will be applied in order to control swelling and compress the skin, ensuring patient’s new contours. The garment is recommended during the first month after surgery, to ensure better and faster results. Also, small drains might be temporarily applied, removing the excess of blood or fluid if needed.
Discomfort in the first days, which are part of the post operative, can be relieved through oral medication. On average, bruising and swelling disappear between 2 and 4 weeks. Final results might take up to 6 months to be seen. [ Top ]
Some cases require additional procedures, in order to reduce excess skin. Special attention is necessary when more than 5 liters of fat have been removed.
Just like any surgery procedure, there are some risks. It is important to ask your plastic surgeon everything you would like to know and share with him all your feelings and fears.
Remember that, for long lasting results, it is important to maintain your weight and keep a healthy lifestyle.
Liposuction does not solve obesity problems and is not applied as a substitute to diet and exercising. In addition, is not an effective solution for saggy skin or cellulite, dimpled skin on thighs, hips and buttocks.
It is also extremely important to follow your physician’s instructions, ensuring best results. The incisions should not be subjected to excessive force, abrasion or motion during the healing process.
Liposuction is cosmetic surgery; you should do it for yourself, as a personal decision. You should not submit this procedure because of someone else or to fit an ideal image. As a patient, you should be aware of expected results and possible risks. [ Top ]
