What are Dental Veneers?

Dental Veneers are a sort of a porcelain cape, similar to a false fingernail. This cape is bonded to the front surface of tooth, in order to provide a better appearance. Through this procedure, desired color, shape and size of teeth can be achieved. Dental Veneers are also an alternative for Dental Bleaching, once a Veneer permanently provides a whitened appearance of the teeth.  [ Top ]

When are porcelain veneers necessary?

Veneers are an effective solution for people who present the following problems of the front teeth:

  1. Stains
  2. Noticeable fillings
  3. Gaps between teeth
  4. Chipped teeth
  5. too short or too narrow teeth
  6. slightly crooked teeth

Why porcelain? Is it long-lasting?

Porcelain is the material which is closest to the enamel of teeth. Porcelain can perfectly match with existing teeth in color. In addition, the material is resistant and long-lasting. Once the Porcelain Veneer is bonded to the tooth, it gets stronger. Also, porcelain cannot be stained or discolored.
Only a thin slice of porcelain is necessary. This way, there is no need to remove too much tooth material to place a porcelain veneer.
Temporary veneers are made of acrylic. However, this material is not as long-lasting and the final appearance isn’t the same as the porcelain veneer.     [ Top ]

How is it performed?

First, the surface of the teeth are trimmed and an impression of the teeth are taken. This impression will be used as a model for the porcelain veneers. Usually, there is no need to place temporary acrylic veneers. Temporary Veneers are only necessary in case of sensibility on the prepared tooth, in order to protect it while the porcelain veneer is being made.
As soon as the porcelain veneers become available, the dentist will bond them to teeth with dental cement.  [ Top ]

Is it painful?

This procedure is close to painless. A local anesthesia might be used in order to minimize the discomfort. Some discomfort is expected, especially around the gums, which might be sensitive after trimming.
Sensitivity to hot and cold is expected at the first days following tooth preparation and when Veneer are placed. These symptoms usually disappear in a few days.  [ Top ]

Veneers vs. Replacement Crowns

Both of them are aesthetic solutions for dental restorations. Veneer is less invasive, because only a thin slice of enamel needs to be removed from tooth. In case of a Replacement Crown, a much larger amount of tooth is removed. In addition, under a veneer treatment is much easier to preserve shape and size of natural teeth. This way, Dental Veneers are a much faster treatment, less traumatic and in most cases, also less expensive.    [ Top ]

Do Veneers require special care?

Veneers are strong and resistant. However, it is not recommended to chew hard things such as specific sweets and chicken bones. In order to maintain their brightness, a non-abrasive toothpaste is recommended.  [ Top ]
